The Butterfly Effect 2: Five Things I Hate About It.
February 15th 2008 02:49
So this is how my new section is going to be working. This is similar to how I would do a daily post on the five things that I hated about the movie but pretty much summed up a lot quicker. I’ll do one or two paragraphs on each thing and finish off the review for the movie of the week with a few final thoughts. So let’s dive into it!
#5: Not big of a time span.
The events of the movie only take place within the past year and nothing more. The first movie went all over the place, from the main character’s youth to his teens. This movie only went back to one year and that was it. I found it got pretty boring since all the movie did was just keep replaying scenes we just saw about fifteen minutes ago this time someone was in a different position or wearing different clothes. I think it was too narrowed down and a lot more possibilities could have been explored over someone’s life time then just the year that had past.
#4: Nick caused his own screw ups.
#3: Selfish main character.
Nick was a total asshole in all the new realities. I mean, he cheated on his girlfriend and wanted to get back together with her after he just finished off nailing the boss’s daughter in a restaurant bathroom earlier. Not only was a total jerk in these new realities he would go back to change the past if he wanted something, (example, he went back to change the past so he could have a better job). The main character of the other movie would go back to change things so they would be better for his friends and his family. This also leads me to the next point;
#2: Unnecessary suicide.
At the end of the movie Nick takes his own life to ‘prevent all of the mishaps from happening and ruining everyone’s life’. Here’s the thing though, all the bad things that happen to everyone HE causes because he is an idiot. He shouldn’t have quit his job or acted like an asshole to everyone. These are things that he ended up doing out of greed. He could have realized, “Hey maybe I should try not to be such an asshole” and he would have lived a normal life. Instead he decided to drive off a cliff thinking it was going to make everything better. He would have had a normal life even if he didn’t kill himself like an idiot.
If they wanted people to think he was going to kill himself to save his girlfriend from getting killed they’re wrong as well. Here is the picture of the final scene in the move when Nick decides to ‘kill himself to save everyone else’.
See, it shows that he didn’t have to take the death and that everything was going to be ok. If he thought that by killing himself would resolve everything why didn’t he just realize that he was going to be an asshole in the future and just well… not be an asshole to begin with? Now that I think about it the main character of the movie brought the whole film down, just like Halle Berry did in Catwoman.
#1: There is nothing different from the first movie.
If you haven’t seen the first movie before you wouldn’t know what was in store for the movie. If you had seen the first movie, like I did, you would have known everything that was going to happen. It felt like I was watching the first movie but this had different characters in it. They didn’t change anything about this movie from the first, at all. The only difference was that the main character of this movie was changing things to better himself and no one else. They even ended it with the main character killing himself (and if you haven’t seen the real ending of the first movie you should, it’s pretty screwed up yet makes a lot more sense).
They could have explored something different with this movie and instead of just focusing the movie on a few friends they could have made it that the main character is trying to prevent a huge disaster from happening or something. It could have been a lot more interesting, or at least make the changes in the movie better than what they were. Instead for this piece of crap we got a recycled script with changes that made no sense at all.
Final Thoughts.
This movie was pretty bad for a sequel which is very disappointing since the first movie was pretty good. I had a friend watch this movie with me and he even agreed this was too narrowed down for a one year span. You can only do so little with a year and it made the film really stretch out.
This was a straight-to-DVD release which always tells me that the movie sucked so bad no one wanted it for the big screen. I couldn’t blame them since this was a bad movie. It went nowhere and when it looked like something interesting was going to happen we just went back to the start and everything repeated all over again.
I wouldn’t recommend fans of the first movie to watch this, nor would I recommend people watch this movie before they watch the original. The Butterfly Effect 1 was a good movie, the 2nd is not. Bad script work and a pretty boring cast of people made me almost fall asleep. I think the only thing to look forward to in this movie is seeing Trevor get his head slammed through a glass table but that’s it. That made me chucky which is pretty sadistic of me but when you watch this movie you’ll realize that’s the only enjoyment you’ll get from that piece of crap.
The Butterfly Effect 2 will be hurled back into the big Bucket of crap from where it came from. Do we all remember my review on ‘Curse of the Komodo’ a few months ago? That really bad monster movie with the porn stars trying to act? Yeah… I knew you’d try to forget about that. Well we’ll be having a trip down memory lane when I review the ‘sequel’ of the movie KvC: Komodo vs. Cobra. It isn’t going to be pretty people don’t worry if you think you’re going through déjà vu again, you’ll see why.
Take care my Bucket Heads and I will see you all next week. Enjoy your weekend!

Bucket Movies
I watched the director's cut of the movie the first time and thought it was pretty screwed up. My friend who watched it at the movies said the ending was completely different. They shouldn't have made a sequel to the movie, though I know there are many people here who think that they shouldn't have made the first to begin with
Thanks for the comment.
