Double Dragon - Part 1

Another bad video game-turned-movie just like BloodRayne, only this was a popular game and the director of this movie never made another movie ever again.

Ahh another week my fellow Bucket Heads which means it’s another crappy movie, which just happens to be another crappy video game turned movie adaptation. Now BloodRayne was pretty crap what made it kinda worse was the fact that not many people had heard of the game before. So if a director is going to pick up a video game and turn it into a movie, he or she or it should look at how popular the video game is.

Enter Double Dragon. This movie was one of the first popular fighting games of its time. You could either pick from twin brothers Billy or Jimmy Lee and battle your way through waves of foes with your fists and feet, even pick up a baseball bat, whip or broken bottle. This video game was kick ass, too bad the movie wasn’t. Let’s kick off the crap this week the same way we kicked off BloodRayne last week.

VIDEO GAME VS. MOVIE!!!

Hmmm... at least they're wearing the same colours.

There were about five Double Dragon video games by the time this movie came out in 1994. The most popular, the first Double Dragon movie, was about two brothers who are expert marital artists called Billy and Jimmy Lee. One day Billy’s girlfriend Marian get taken away by thugs from a gang known as the Black Warriors. Billy and Jimmy set off to rescue the damsel-in-distress while kicking some major ass along the way.

The movie was about two punk kids who live in a ruined Los Angeles that was destroyed in a major earthquake in 2007. It’s nearing the end of 2007 and L.A is still standing, back to the movie. The two punk kids, Billy and Jimmy, have to stop the evil Shuko from gaining the power of the Dragon Amulet that was split into two pieces, hence the name “Double Dragon”.

Now in none of the games do they mention some medallion called the Double Dragon Amulet, in fact the only thing that comes close to being an amulet are the magical stones one must collect in the 3rd game of the series. If the movie tried to base itself around this third game, they received the result they were looking for as the third game of the Double Dragon series is hated by many fans. Here are some other differences in the movie compared to the game:

- Marian, Billy girlfriend in the game, isn’t Billy’s girlfriend.
- Not only is Marian not Billy’s girlfriend but she runs a gang called the Power Corps.
- The two brothers have an Asian stepmother/foster mother/guardian called Satori.
- The brothers drive a car that looks like a station wagon Batmobile that’s powered by burning rubbish.
- Jimmy is older than Billy when they are meant to be twins.

Now here are some thing similar about the movie and the game:

- They have the same name and the same names of the main characters, Billy and Jimmy.
- They have two villains from the game in the movie, one is a chick that uses a whip called Lash and the other is a muscle-head called Abobo.

So the only things linking the video game to the movie are the names of the characters. What sucks about this movie is how completely childish and family friendly they made this movie. The video game involved you going around beating the crap out of people with your bare hands. In this movie our warriors trip over their foes with marbles and basketballs. The dialogue is really terrible as well you can tell it was written directly for children. Any adult fan who went into this movie hoping for something dark would have punched the nearest kid in the face out of frustration.

Well at least the movies had gangs right? Deadly, dangerous, bad-ass gangs they ruled the streets at night. Well, not really. Come back tomorrow and we’ll take a look at the dangerous gangs that terrorized citizens at night, mainly looking at the wild, uncontrollable Power Corps, or Power Core, I can’t remember their name.

Yet another one of my childhood video games as been ruined by Hollywood. Why must they torture me so!
