Chocolate (2008) Review

April 26th 2010 17:35
A strange phenomenon in other countries is the need for a movie to be
Chocolate Poster
She's a sweet as chocolate, but deadly as . . uh . . .really hard chocolate, or somthing
an action film, no matter how otherwise touching it's meant to be. Mui-thai fight scenes are are natural to Thai films as lighting, it doesn't matter if your making a drama (The Letter) , a comedy (The Holy Man) , a sci-fi film (Mercury Man) or even a film about transvestites (The Adventures of Iron Pussy) your absolutely NEED Mui-Thai fight scenes to make a movie watchable. With the rise to stardom of Tony Jaa, other martial arts such as Tai-kwon-do and Capoeira are being welcomed into Thai theaters, but nonetheless fight scenes are an absolute stable of the country's cinema.

Enter the touching, tear jerking action film Chocolate, released in Thailand in 2008 and unleashed on the American DVD and blue-ray market the year after. In the midst of negotiations between the Yakuza, and the Thai Mafia, Yakuza enforcer Masashi falls in love with Zin, the Thai boss's girlfriend. The two have a brief romance, and marry but the wily Mob boss find out about this forbidden marriage and Masashi is forbidden from seeing his wife and sent back to Tokyo, and Zin is forced to raise their child alone. The child Zen grows up next to a Mui-Thai school, and spending her time at home playing video games and watching martial arts films (In the Thai cut this includes Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies, but due to copyrights in the American cut it's only Tony Jaa films) as well as watching the Mui-thai school next door. Her autism allows her to assimilate these skills, thanks to her heightened senses and constant physical training, she become a formidable fighter. When her Zin contracts cancer, Zen goes on a martial arts rampage to collect the money needed for her treatment from old Mob contacts who sill owed her money. Of course, this stirs up Zin's old mafia cronies to fight back, and even prompted Zen's Yakuza father to come into the picture to reclaim his daughter.

Chocolate promised to help Tony Jaa Fanatics get their fix while they waited for his next movie to come stateside. Even though she was advertise as featuring the “Female Tony Jaa” Yanin Vismitananda, this 26 year old Karate champion turned action film starlet doesn't manage to capture the same ferocity that made Jaa's films classic. This is't to say Chocolate isn't an amazing martial arts film, The fight scenes are fast paced and brutal, and Yanin does have her own style that's gracful and fun to watch. The last 25 minutes of the movie is pure, non-stop action that ends the engrossing story with the Zen's family united, and fighting side by side. While the action still pales in comparison to the work of Tony Jaa, the story alone will have you cheering Zen on from beginning to end. The films depiction of autism is also very accurate, you feel the filmmakers had real respect for those with mental disabilities as they don't poke fun at her condition, depicting Zen with dignity and real heart

Cage (1989) Review

April 7th 2010 22:30
Martial arts and “fight” films are a dime a dozen. No self respecting
Cage, Lou,
Lou squares off inside the cage
Video Store doesn't have a martial arts Rack overstuffed with a thousand and one interchangeable titles Like “Abbot White” “Blood fighter” “Shoot Fighter” or “Shaolin Drunken Monk”. Usually these films aren't bad so much as they are very formulaic, you can watch two or three of these movies in a row and they'll tend to run together. This goes for Hong Kong an American Martial arts films. Rarely do you have a film that stands apart, but buried in those endless stacks of Shaolin this and ninja that, you'll find some fairly good films. It takes a bit of work, but the search is half the fun for folks like me.
Lang Elliot's 1989 fight film, “Cage” is an example of an action/martial arms movie that makes an honest attempt at a fulfilling story to go with the macho action. Bodybuilder Lou Ferigno and ex-boxer turned b-movie superstar Reb Brown (Of Space Mutiny fame) play Vietnam veterans Billy and Scot respectively, as they try to work out a life for themselves as bartenders. Billy took a bullet to the head saving his Scot's life, and became very mentally disabled, reduced to a the intelligence of a child. Scot takes care of Billy, and the two's friendship really does pull at the heartstrings. Lou Ferigno shows surprising range playing Billy, and genuinely makes you care for the characters, but this isn't a lifetime original, so things will soon go south. When a local fight club is in need of good fighters, and they see Billy an Scot's skills in a bar brawl, the local gangs seek to coerce them into fighting. The simple-minded Billy is eventually manipulated into fighting, sadly not even understanding the nature of the underground fights. His friend Scot has to rescue him, and in true 1980's action flick style the best way to get him back is by blowing things up, setting fire to other things and beating the snot out of the bad guys.
Much of the film is schlocky 80s style shootouts and fistfights, but in an action movie reversal, the story is paramount. Because of Lou Ferigno's size he's often cast as a brainless muscle man, but this movie allows him to show off his real range.. I had the pleasure of meeting Lou Ferigno at a comic book convention a few years ago, and I can say that despite the fact I was a dwarf compared to him, I never once felt intimidated. This is because he's not one of those hulking maniacs you see at the gym who like to throw his weight around, he's a
Lou, Cage
Poor Billy douns't get it
charming, humble guy. I was amazed in this movie to see him playing a lovable, whimsical character, who could if need be, fight bravely It's an interesting, fresh take on an action film. However, his co-star Reb Brown, known for being the brainless beefcake carries his roles, but he's Lou Ferigno's polar opposite. Where Lou plays a soft-spoken and simple, Brown's character, Scot is a gun toting maniac who tears through the bad guys with reckless abandon, shooting some, setting fire to others, and snapping the neck of one of his enemies when he meets in the cage. This character is almost comical at times, especially when Reb Brown lets loose with his trademark screech as he springs into action

The Cube (1969) Review

March 29th 2010 17:03
We all know Jim Henson, the puppeteer and film maker that gave us Sesame Street and it's grown up cousin The Muppet Show as well as countless television specials. A man of
Cube, Jim Henson, Muppets
Richard Schal plays the unamed main character, and he'll never get out of the cube.'tull he's dead, dead, dead,
great imagination and a child-like wonder that was apparent in all his work. In this medium of puppeteering, (Muppeteering?) he expressed himself quite well, though one of his most brilliant works doesn't involve any puppets at all.
In 1969 Jim Henson was still fairly new to the business. Rolf the dog had made his historic appearance on the Jimmy Dean show, and Sesame Street was starting to take off, but Henson was still trying to find his place. He Decided to try his hand at conventional film making produced and directed a short film called “Timepiece” that won a few awards, so NBC gave him a chance to prove himself with a full length TV movie as part of their “Experiments in television” series.
The film, simply titled: “The Cube” is the story of an unnamed man (played by Richard Schaal from 1972's “Slaughterhouse Five”) who wakes up in a small, white paneled cube to strange otherworldly sounds, that soon fade. The entire film takes place on that one set, as strange characters come and go through panels in the cube, scolding the main character when he tries to leave making clear that “This is my door”. He's visited by a vast array of characters, a musician, a black supremacist, scientists, monks, and the cube's long-suffering maintenance man who pops in occasionally to fix damage to the cube. Despite all the questions the main characters asks of these people as to why he's in the cube and what the cube is, he never gets a simple strait answer. All of the visiting characters behave as if the cube is perfectly normal and seem to think the main character should already know everything about it, including how to escape (at one point the Manager of the cube even insists he leave). One of the more memorable character is the Cube's Manager who shows up several times during the movie to ask the main character how he's doing, or to simply poke fun at the trapped man. The Manager seems to be fully aware that the main character doesn't know what's going on, and even is aware of his suffering but seems delighted to see him suffer. Every time things seem to be going well, or characters do things to make life better for the Man, things suddenly take horrid turns for the worse. Beautiful things become ugly, soothing things become grating and there's the caretaker, heartlessly popping in to remind the Man he's trapped. The Main character seems very aware of his situation, and reacts very much like a real person would, eventually becoming very frustrated with his situation

Has Rayne bitten off more than she can chew just as I have with the amount of bad movies I've watched, or is she just a bad actress? Yeah, bad actress, just what I thought...

The game plays out just like a movie with screwed up bad guys, kick ass good guys and an awesome storyline with some cool twists - but would a Metal Gear Solid movie actually be any good?

For the past few weeks we’ve been taking a look at a specific field within the movie business – video games that have been taken from their consoles and recreated onto the big screen. It has been a long journey and we’ve all experienced joy, laughter, happiness, misery, pain and death. We’ve looked at some of the best video game movies out there, we’ve looked at some of the worst video game movies out there, but what does the future hold? I’ve done a little research and here are some of the movies that are coming out soon or will begin production soon

For the past few weeks I’ve taken a look at a bunch of video games that made their way to the big screen. We’ve seen our favourite video games taken from our living rooms and turned into big budget movies in Hollywood. It’s exciting when you hear that you’re favourite video game that you played as a children for hours on end is going to become a motion picture

Someone not only had the bright idea of making a spin-off movie based on a Batman character, but they also got the bright idea of having Halle Berry play the role as well. Someone must have been smoking one too many joints.

With these three bad boys of the video game world producing awesome games, which ones are going to fall to Hollywood's trap?

Since the dawn of man there have been many forms of entertainment. It began back in the prehistoric times where cavemen would pass time by having mammoth races or chasing stone wheels down a hill. As humans evolved we found new ways to keep ourselves entertained. The people watched gladiators fight to the death in Ancient Rome, the people in England sat through the wonderful plays produced by William Shakespeare, and the people of Salam enjoyed burning those damn nasty witches
